Welcome to the Advantage Over podcast, the only podcast for the global rugby referee community, brought to you by RugbyReferee.net. We’ll be covering the issues you, the rugby referee community, want to listen to.

We know that most of our readers will be referees, prospective referees or actively involved in some other match official capacity. So we want to know from you what you’d like to listen to while you’re training, driving to or from a game, or just while you’re getting on with your day-to-day life.

But we also know that some of you are just rugby fans who want an insight into our world, or to question things. You’re just as welcome and we’d like to hear from you too!

  1. I would love this. I’ve never played, so my passion for the sport is sometimes lacking in practical understanding. Clear, straightforward discussion, analysis and opinions on the work you guys do. Make it fun, shouldn’t take itself too seriously. Include fun anecdotes, on and off pitch. Invite players, coaches for discussion etc.

    • Really love the pod! As a relatively new ref it would be great to hear some more discussion about the basics perhaps, positioning and useful phrases to use etc. There isn’t an exhaustive amount of information out there about this. I’d love to know if people have a way of reviewing their own games – a systematic approach so you can try and learn from each game?

  2. Why did World Rugby not comment on ANGUS GARDNER blunder in the last moment of the England vs Springbok game last week?

    • In the same way they didn’t comment on the other 6,999 referee decisions that weekend. A cursory moment of objectivity would show you views on either side. So maybe, just maybe, it wasn’t a “blunder” but a different opinion to yours.

  3. A question of rules –
The player in possession at the bottom of a ruck is lying on the ground, hands reaching backwards on the ball, thinks his 9 is going to take the ball and removes his hands then realises that is not going to happen and picks the ball up and pops it back to one of his own team ?? Surely he is then playing the ball off the ground !! Happened in the 20/21 minute of Wales v Australia immediately preceeding the Aussie try !!

  4. Just listened to Episode 23, and as a newbie myself, wanted to say thank you so much for this interview. It was so good to hear about someone else’s first steps into refereeing.

    • Well that’s most kind. Glad it’s of some use to you! Let me know what else you’d find useful as a new referee! ^Keith
