Advantage Over episode 22: Refereeing the scrum

Refereeing the Scrum – with Scrumstrong.com and Super Rugby prop, Sam Needs.

On the latest episode of the podcast, Sam Needs from Warringah Rugby, formerly of Super Rugby side, the NSW Waratahs, joins us to talk about all things related to the scrum.

We chat about the different elements of setting up the scrum, what to look for, and then how to spot the issues that often crop up after the put in – all from a playing and a refereeing perspective.

We also discuss Sam’s idea around “Scrumpires” – speciality referees who come on to sort scrums out. Read https://scrumstrong.com/a-solution-to-refereeing-the-scrum/

  1. As an “old hooker” from the days when hooker meant hooking I suggest that now, as then, most referees have never been in a scrum, let alone the front row, and try as they might do not understand the mechanics of rummaging!!
