This is one of the quietest rugby weekends on the global calendar as the international window closes and vast majority of cross-border and domestic comps are finished, or not yet started.
Ella Goldsmith (pictured top left) and Maggie Cogger-Orr (top right) have the big finals with the Super W and Super Rugby Aupiki finals taking place this weekend. Ella is in Ba as the Fijiana Drua host the final there. In Christchurch, Maggie referees her second Aupiki finale. The winners of both will play off in a few weeks for the pan-Tasman spoils!
In the USA, it’s the last round of the Women’s Elite Rugby. The top two teams will play-off for the Legacy Cup on 8 August – the Legacy Cup. This weekend, TC Gemini (Minnesota) play Bay Breakers (Sacremento) who are a point apart in second and third – Amelia Luciano will refereee it, which will determine who plays Denver in the final. In South Africa, it’s the final of the Currie Cup first division, where Jonathan Lottering (bottom left) taking charge of the Eagles v Valke match. We also have Rugby Europe 7s – this time in Split, Croatia. Some familiar names in play there in the women’s comp at least. Marco Minelli (bottom right) from Portugal is in the men’s comp.
And finally, there’s a World Record attempt this weekend in England where four teams (two men’s and two women’s) are attempting to play the longest ever 7s rugby matches – the currrent record is 24 hours and 30 minutes, set in 2017.
