We’re approaching the first weekend of the 2018 autumn international window and the referees, will by now, be in the right places to oversee proceedings. First up will be Matthew Carley of the RFU who referees Japan v New Zealand. The bigger of the northern matches sees Gus Gardner in charge of the England v South Africa match at Twickenham. There are two ladies internationals as well, as Aimee Barrett-Theron is in Chicago to referee the US v Black Ferns and Ian Tempest is in Italy who host the Scotland. Joining Aimee in Chicago is England’s Karl Dickson who gets his first World Rugby men’s international as the US Eagles host the Maori All Blacks.
Elsewhere, the Pro14 continues, with one non-usual referee. Kiwi, Ben O’Keeffe acclimatises to northern rugby before his internationals, by refereeing Edinburgh v Scarlets. It’s the second week of the Premiership Cup in England, and it will see the debut of Sara Cox (pictured left), the RFU’s first contracted female referee, as she takes the whistle in her first match at this level. She follows Clare Daniels being the first female AR and 4th official and Clare Hodnett as the first female TMO at the top of the game in England.
