For the new 2025 season, North America’s professional league, Major League Rugby will continue to innovate and tweak the game as they try and grow and attract new fans to the rugby union. The crux is to keep the ball in flow more, remove complexities, and reduce long stoppages. For the new MLR season, in addition to the Global Law Trials introduced by World Rugby in January, the following law variations will be in play:
- Knock or throw forward into touch -> lineout only (Law 11.2)
- Knock forward from the field of play into in-goal and grounded -> Drop out on try line (Law 12.12a)
- If the ball isn’t used within the 5 seconds “use it” call -> FK (Law 15.17)
- Unsuccessful end to a maul -> FK (Law 16.17)
And continuing from 2024:
- Twenty minute red card replacement (Law 9.30)
- Automatic 7 points (no conversion) if a try is scored between the posts (Law 8.8b)
- A penalty awarded at a reset scrum, cannot lead to another scrum option (Law 20.3)
