As the World Rugby 7s series kicks off in earnest this weekend in Dubai, we thought it’d be good to speak to a referee who’s very familiar with the 7s scene! Craig Evans is a professional referee from South Wales and has represented the WRU on the world stage. He is managing to mix his refereeing development across both elements of the elite game – 7s (he’ll be at 6 of the 10 tournaments this coming season) and with refereeing 15s in Wales and in the Pro14. In this episode we talk about:
- How he does manage to transition to both forms of the game
- What a World 7s camp is like as a referee
- How to manage resilience as a referee and psychological elements of refereeing
- What advice he tends to give to referees he ends up watching
- What it’s like to be part of a professional referee circle with Nigel Owens at its’ core.
We also cover off news about:
- Angus Gardner winning Referee of the Year at the 2018 World Rugby Awards
- Saying goodbye to John Lacey as he referees his final international this weekend (1 December 2018)
- New Zealand’s National Referee Squad announcements
